  • About the Book

    Book Summary

As the amount of information in biology expands dramatically, it becomes increasingly important for textbooks to distill the vast amount of scientific knowledge into concise principles and enduring concepts. As with previous editions, Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition accomplishes this goal with clear writing and beautiful illustrations. The Sixth Edition has been extensively revised and updated with the latest research in the field of cell biology, and it provides an exceptional framework for teaching and learning.

The entire illustration program has been greatly enhanced.Protein structures better illustrate structure–function relationships, icons are simpler and more consistent within and between chapters, and micrographs have been refreshed and updated with newer, clearer, or better images. As a new feature, each chapter now contains intriguing openended questions highlighting “What We Don’t Know,” introducing students to challenging areas of future research. Updated end-of-chapter problems reflect new research discussed in the text, and these problems have been expanded to all chapters by adding questions on developmental biology, tissues and stem cells, pathogens, and the immune system.

      • Incorporates important new discoveries into a logical and cohesive narrative that provides a conceptual framework for cell biology.
      • Explains newly discovered functions for RNA molecules.
      • Includes the latest findings on the structure and function of the human genome.
      • Explains recent insights into how low-complexity protein sequences help organize the cell interior.
      • Describes powerful new methods, many invented since the last edition, that scientists use to visualize subcellular structures and analyze genes and proteins—with a new section emphasizing the need for mathematics to unravel the complexities of cell function.
      • Incorporates new results that refine our understanding of intracellular organization, membrane structure, dynamics, and transport.
      • Focuses on the fundamental concepts in cell signaling, with emphasis on key principles underlying the circuitry of signaling systems.
      • Describes how the latest discoveries in cytoskeletal protein dynamics apply to key questions in cell structure and polarity.
      • Covers new insights into the causes, genetics, and treatments of cancer—including a discussion of personalized therapies.
      • Adds new sections on timing, growth control, and morphogenesis in the development of multicellular organisms.
      • Features an extensively revised and expanded treatment of stem cell biology and technology—including nuclear reprogramming, ES cells, and iPS cells.

"Throughout the book, emphasis is placed not just on what 'we know' but also on 'how we know' and 'what remains to be discovered'- important for engaging and enthusing students....A quarter of a century after the first edition revolutionised cell biology textbooks, the new edition is as fresh, comprehensive and above all, as readable as ever....Like its predecessors, this is a superb textbook for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students."

-British Society for Developmental Biology Newsletter, Summer 2008, Vol. 29, No. 1

"Professors, lecturers, and instructors will find the fifth edition of the book Molecular Biology of the Cell and its accompanying Problems Book to be an excellent choice for guiding their students through the maze of the cell's molecular structures and biochemical processes....With countless colorful illustrations and a large number of photographs and tables, reading the text becomes not only an educational experience, but also a highly enjoyable one for those students who wish to discover the inner workings of the magnificent cellular machine....Educators will also find the DVD-ROM to be a rich electronic resource when compiling their lectures....No less important is the Problems Book, which contains numerous exercises and questions that are an integral part of the learning process, and that teachers, instructors, and students are sure to appreciate."

    Instructor Resources

Art of Molecular Biology of the Cell, Sixth Edition The images from the book are available in two convenient formats: PowerPoint® and JPEG.

Figure-Integrated Lecture Outlines The section headings, concept headings, and figures from the text have been integrated into PowerPoint presentations.

Animations and Videos There are over 170 animations and videos narrated by Julie Theriot (Stanford University School of Medicine), available in WMV and Quicktime formats.

Question Bank Written by Hossein Amiri (University of California, Santa Cruz), this greatly expanded question bank includes a variety of question formats: multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the- blank, true-false, and matching. There are approximately 35-60 questions per chapter totaling over 1,200 questions, and a large number of the multiple-choice questions will be suitable for use with personal response systems (clickers).

Diploma® Test Generator Software The questions from the question bank have been loaded into the Diploma test generator software. The software is easy to use and can scramble questions to create multiple tests. Questions are organized by chapter and type, and can be additionally categorized by the instructor according to difficulty or subject. Existing questions can be edited and new ones added. It is compatible with several course management systems, including Blackboard®.

Medical Topics Guide This document highlights medically-relevant topics covered throughout the book, and will be particularly useful for instructors with a large number of premedical, health science, or nursing students.

Media Guide This document provides an overview to the multimedia available for students and instructors and contains the text of the voiceover narration for all of the movies.

Blackboard® and LMS Integration The movies and "Cell Viewer" slide shows for students that accompany the book can be integrated into Blackboard or other learning management systems.  The movies run off a streaming server and will not take up space on your Learning Management System.  These resources are bundled into a “Common Cartridge” that facilitates bulk uploading of textbook resources into Blackboard and other learning management systems. The LMS Common Cartridge can be downloaded from our Instructors Site.
